Ruthven Barracks is a stone-built military fortification situated near Kingussie in Inverness-shire, erected in the early eighteenth century following the Jacobite uprising of 1715. The structure was constructed as part of the British government's systematic programme of garrisoning the Scottish Highlands to maintain control and suppress potential further rebellion. The barracks comprise a substantial rectangular stone building with corner bastions, designed to accommodate soldiers and supplies, and formerly included associated military structures within its defensive perimeter. The site was abandoned after the final Jacobite defeat at Culloden in 1746 and subsequently fell into ruin, though its substantial stonework has survived to the present day as a prominent monument to the post-rebellion military infrastructure of the Highlands.
