Overview

History & significance

Sea Brows is a milefortlet, specifically the twenty-third installation in the series of fortified structures built along the Cumbrian coast as part of the Roman frontier defences in northern Britain. Dating to the second century AD, it forms part of the coastal extension of the Hadrianic frontier system and was constructed to regulate movement and maintain military control along this strategically important stretch of the northwestern frontier. The milefortlet survives as an earthwork monument consisting of raised platform structures characteristic of this class of small fortified installation, positioned approximately five hundred metres south-west of Bank End near the Cumberland coast. These coastal milefortlets represented an integral component of Roman military infrastructure designed to protect supply routes and monitor activity along the Irish Sea littoral.
