Overview

History & significance

Section of Danes' Dyke between the Cliff Plantation and the B1255 is a scheduled ancient monument forming part of the extensive linear earthwork known as Danes' Dyke, which crosses the Holderness peninsula in East Yorkshire. The dyke is a substantial bank and ditch construction that extends for approximately seven miles from Bridlington Bay to the River Hull, and dates to the Anglo-Saxon period, probably constructed during the 9th century as a defensive boundary. This particular section, located north of Bridlington, survives as a prominent landscape feature with a well-defined bank and accompanying ditch, characteristic of the fortification's original engineering. The monument represents an important example of large-scale Anglo-Saxon territorial defence, possibly demarcating the boundary of the kingdom of Northumbria against Viking incursion or serving as an internal administrative frontier.
