Seton West Mains is a post-medieval agricultural enclosures complex located in East Lothian, Scotland, approximately 500 metres south-west of the main settlement at Seton. The site comprises field divisions and stock enclosures characteristic of the early modern period reorganisation of Scottish farmland, when traditional open-field systems were replaced by more defined, rectangular parcels bounded by stone dykes or earth banks. Such enclosures reflect the gradual intensification of land management and the consolidation of holdings that occurred across Lowland Scotland from the sixteenth century onwards.
The monument sits upon bedrock of the Clackmannan Group, a sequence of sedimentary rock cycles deposited during the Westphalian period of the Carboniferous era.
