Overview

History & significance

Shap Premonstratensian Abbey is a twelfth-century monastic foundation in Westmorland, established by the Premonstratensian order and dissolved during the Reformation. The substantial ruins of the abbey church remain prominent within the landscape, whilst the precinct is defined by surviving sections of the perimeter wall that once enclosed the monastic complex. The community's economy was supported by ancillary structures including an abbey mill and associated mill race, fed by the watercourse that also served two fishponds within or adjoining the precinct, features typical of Premonstratensian estates of the medieval period. The site represents an important example of a substantial northern English monastic house and its supporting infrastructure.
