Shotley Battery is a Second World War coastal defence installation located in Suffolk, comprising gun emplacements and associated fortifications constructed to protect the strategically important Harwich area from enemy attack. The site includes subterranean air raid shelters built to provide protection for military personnel and civilians during aerial bombardment. Dating from the early 1940s, the battery represents the substantial investment in coastal defences undertaken by the British armed forces during the latter half of the Second World War, when invasion threat and sustained German air attack posed significant risks to East Anglian settlements and installations. The surviving physical remains demonstrate the engineering approaches adopted for both offensive gun positions and defensive refuge during the conflict.
