Shotley Battery is a Second World War coastal defence installation located at Shotley in Suffolk, positioned to protect the strategically important naval anchorages at Harwich and the mouth of the Rivers Orwell and Stour. The site comprises gun emplacements and associated subterranean air raid shelters constructed during the early 1940s as part of Britain's coastal fortification programme against invasion threat. The battery represents a typical example of wartime defensive architecture, combining above-ground artillery positions with underground concrete structures designed to provide protection for personnel against air attack and bombardment. These remains survive as evidence of the extensive military preparations undertaken along the East Anglian coast during the Second World War.
