Sigston Castle is a medieval enclosure castle situated approximately four hundred metres north of Kirby Sigston church in North Yorkshire. The site comprises an earthwork defensive enclosure typical of the twelfth century, representing a form of fortified settlement common in the period following the Norman Conquest. The castle's physical remains consist of substantial earthen banks and ditches defining the perimeter of the enclosure, which would have served both defensive and administrative functions for a local lord or landholder. Although now reduced to earthwork form, Sigston Castle demonstrates the pattern of castle-building in the Yorkshire region during the early medieval period, when such fortified enclosures formed important centres of territorial control and lordly residence.
