Overview

History & significance

Silloth Golf Course tower 12a is a Roman fortlet forming part of the coastal defence system established along the Cumbrian coast during the later imperial period. Located approximately 670 metres west-north-west of Blitterlees Farm near Silloth in Cumberland, it represents one of a series of small fortified positions designed to protect the frontier zone and control movement along the vulnerable western seaboard. The tower dates to the late second or third century AD and would have functioned as a lookout and garrison post within the wider network of Hadrianic and post-Hadrianic defences. Though now largely reduced to archaeological earthwork, its position within the scheduled ancient monument landscape demonstrates the strategic importance Roman military engineers placed upon maintaining security across northern Britain's maritime frontier.
