The hillfort immediately south west of Gear is a univallate earthwork defence of Iron Age date, characteristic of the fortified settlements that proliferated across Cornwall during the later prehistoric period. The monument consists of a single defensive bank and ditch, a relatively modest fortification compared to some of its multivallate counterparts, suggesting either a smaller settlement or one of more modest resources. Its location in south west Cornwall places it within a landscape scattered with similar hill fortifications, indicating the strategic and possibly territorial importance of the area during the Iron Age. The slight nature of its surviving earthworks reflects both the passage of time and the vulnerability of such monuments to agricultural and other land use activities across the intervening centuries.
