St Augustine's Abbey is a ruined Benedictine monastery located in Canterbury, Kent, founded in 598 by St Augustine of Canterbury following his mission to bring Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent. The abbey became one of the most significant religious houses in medieval England, serving as an important centre of learning and a royal burial place for the kings of Kent. The surviving ruins, dating from various periods between the Anglo-Saxon foundation and the 16th century Dissolution, include substantial stone foundations and fragmentary walls that demonstrate the scale and architectural development of the monastery over nearly a thousand years. The site was extensively excavated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, revealing evidence of the abbey's layout and the evolution of its buildings from the earliest Anglo-Saxon structures through to the late medieval period.
