St Monans windmill and saltpans is a complex of industrial structures located in the East Neuk of Fife, comprising remains of salt production facilities and associated milling infrastructure. The site represents the development of saltpan industry in this coastal settlement, which became significant during the early modern period when salt manufacture formed a major element of the local economy. The windmill would have been employed to pump seawater or provide motive power for processing operations integral to salt production, a common feature of Scottish coastal industrial sites from the sixteenth century onwards. The remains visible today reflect the material evidence of an important pre-industrial manufacturing enterprise that sustained the community of St Monans for several centuries.
