The site sits on bedrock of the Gala Group, a wacke formation dating to the Telychian period, which comprises the rough sandstone and siltstone geology characteristic of the Southern Uplands. This hard stone would have presented significant challenges to cultivation, necessitating the clearance cairns visible across the landscape as farmers removed surface boulders to prepare ground for agriculture.
The homestead represents settlement and land use practices from the post-medieval period, when farming communities were actively reshaping the moorland landscape.
