History & significance

Stone circle, cairn alignment, cider millstone and boundary ditch 410m south east of Sourton Tors is a Bronze Age ritual and funerary complex located on Dartmoor in Devon. The site comprises multiple elements typical of Dartmoor's prehistoric landscape, including a stone circle and associated cairn alignment which date to the Bronze Age, alongside later agricultural features including a cider millstone and boundary ditch that reflect the site's continued use and modification through subsequent periods. The stone circle represents evidence of ritual or ceremonial activity, whilst the cairn alignment may indicate processional routes or territorial markers associated with the Bronze Age barrow cemetery of which this site forms part. The survival of later features demonstrates the palimpsest of land use across Dartmoor, where prehistoric monuments remained significant landscape features into the medieval and post-medieval periods.
