Strata Florida Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1164 in the valley of the River Teifi in Ceredigion, Wales, by monks from Whitland Abbey. The abbey became one of the most important religious houses in medieval Wales, serving as a centre of learning and a significant landowner throughout the Middle Ages. The surviving remains include the substantial Gothic west doorway of the abbey church, portions of the claustral buildings, and an ornate thirteenth-century tile pavement, which reflect the institution's considerable wealth and architectural ambition. The site continued in use as a burial ground for Welsh nobility and gentry long after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, cementing its enduring importance in Welsh cultural memory.
