Swarthy Hill North tower 20b is a Roman coastal defence tower forming part of the fortified frontier system constructed along the Cumbrian coast during the later imperial period. Located approximately 460 metres south-west of Blue Dial in Cumberland, the tower represents one element of a coordinated network of military installations designed to protect Roman-controlled territory and monitor maritime activity. The structure dates to the later Roman occupation of Britain, when such coastal defences became increasingly important to the province's security strategy. The tower's remains, now scheduled as an ancient monument, contribute to the archaeological and historical understanding of Roman frontier architecture and military organisation in the north-western frontier zone.
