Overview

History & significance

Tennant Canal: Skewen Cutting and tramroad bridge is a Post Medieval transport structure located in Wales, forming part of the Tennant Canal system developed during the Industrial Revolution. The cutting and associated tramroad bridge date to the late eighteenth century and represent the infrastructure created to facilitate the movement of coal, iron, and other industrial goods from the South Wales valleys to tidal water at Swansea. The surviving earthwork of the cutting and the engineering of the bridge demonstrate the scale of canal construction undertaken during this period of industrial expansion. The site remains an important monument to the development of transport networks that supported Wales's position as a major centre of heavy industry.
