Overview

History & significance

The Benedictine priory and precinct of St Mary, Nuneaton is a medieval religious house founded in the early twelfth century as a daughter priory of the English Benedictine tradition. The site occupies a substantial precinct in the town of Nuneaton in Warwickshire and preserves earthwork and structural remains of the monastic complex that once stood there. The priory was dissolved during the Reformation in the sixteenth century, after which the precinct and its buildings fell into disuse and decay. Fragmentary architectural remains and the defined precinct boundaries visible in the landscape preserve evidence of the priory's former extent and importance as a regional ecclesiastical centre.
