The Catrail is a linear earthwork situated on the south-eastern slope of White Hill in Roxburghshire, Scotland. This defensive or boundary dyke, approximately 650 metres in length, comprises a ditch with an accompanying bank and represents a form of linear fortification characteristic of the Iron Age or early historical period in southern Scotland. The earthwork's precise chronology remains uncertain, though its construction technique and morphology suggest it may date to the later first millennium BC or the early centuries AD, a period of significant social and territorial reorganisation in the Scottish Borders. The Catrail exemplifies the linear earthwork tradition common to the region, reflecting patterns of land demarcation or defence that characterised pre-Roman and Romano-British frontier zones.
