History & significance

Thetford Warren is a scheduled ancient monument comprising the earthworks and buried remains of the western boundary banks of a medieval rabbit warren, situated in Suffolk. The site includes trapping banks and associated enclosures that formed part of the Warren's management infrastructure, dating to the medieval period when such commercial warrens were established across East Anglia to supply rabbits for food and fur. Reed Fen Lodge, a warrener's house also located within the monument boundaries, represents the residential infrastructure required to maintain and oversee the warren's operations. The surviving earthwork features and subsurface deposits preserve evidence of medieval and post-medieval land use and provide archaeological testimony to the significant commercial rabbit farming practices that characterised this region during the medieval period.
