The Knock is a settlement located in Dumfriesshire, approximately 300 metres west-south-west of Burrancehill Cottages. The site sits upon bedrock of the Hawick Group, a formation of wacke rock that dates to the Wenlock period, which gives the local landscape its characteristic rugged geology and limited soil depth typical of the Southern Uplands.
As a settlement, The Knock represents evidence of human occupation and land use within the upland margins of south-west Scotland. The dwelling structures and associated features at the site would have been adapted to exploit the pastoral and agricultural potential of Dumfriesshire's moorland and valley environments, a pattern of settlement seen throughout the region during the medieval and early modern periods.
The site is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM3489, recognising its archaeological and historical significance. The monument's survival in the landscape provides valuable evidence for understanding settlement patterns, building techniques and rural life in this part of Scotland.
