The Roman Baths and site of Roman town, Bath, is a major archaeological complex in Somerset comprising the remains of a substantial Roman settlement centred on the naturally hot springs of the area. The site is principally known for its exceptionally well-preserved bathing complex, which developed from the late first century AD onwards as a thermal spa complex dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, drawing visitors from across the Roman province of Britannia. The architectural remains include the Great Bath, hypocausted (underfloor heated) chambers, and associated structures demonstrating sophisticated Roman engineering adapted to exploit the site's geothermal resources. The settlement itself, known as Aquae Sulis, was an important religious and leisure destination throughout the Roman period, with material evidence including coins, inscriptions, and sculptural fragments attesting to its significance as a pilgrimage site and commercial centre until the end of Roman rule in Britain in the early fifth century.
