The Shene Charterhouse is a Carthusian monastery founded in 1414 by Henry V on the royal manor of Shene, near Richmond in Surrey. The monastery was established as a house of the Carthusian order, one of the most austere monastic communities in medieval England, and remained an important spiritual centre until its dissolution during the Reformation in 1539. The surviving remains include substantial sections of the monastic buildings, notably parts of the cloister and residential cells characteristic of Carthusian planning, which reflected the order's emphasis on individual contemplation within a communal framework. The site preserves important archaeological evidence of late medieval monastic life and architecture, and portions of the original boundary walls and structures continue to define the landscape of this historically significant location.
