History & significance

The vallum and early Roman road between the field boundary east of turret 34a and the field boundary west of milecastle 36 is a section of Hadrian's Wall complex in Northumberland, extending across wall miles 34, 35 and 36. This monument comprises elements of the vallum, the substantial ditch and bank system constructed on the southern side of the Wall during the early second century AD, together with evidence of an early Roman road associated with the Wall's construction and maintenance phases. The physical remains represent the characteristic defensive and logistical infrastructure of this major frontier monument, which was begun under the Emperor Hadrian around AD 122. The preserved earthworks in this section demonstrate the integrated planning of the Wall system, wherein the vallum served to control access and the road facilitated military movement and supply along the frontier.
