The walls, towers, gates and posterns of the City of Chester is a scheduled ancient monument comprising the medieval defensive circuit that encircles the city centre. The stone walls, constructed in phases from the late twelfth century onwards with substantial rebuilding in the fourteenth century, represent one of the most complete examples of medieval town defences surviving in England. The circuit incorporates several towers and the four principal gates—Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridgegate—which controlled access to the city and its important trading routes. The walls, which still stand to considerable height in places, were built partly upon and utilising the line of the earlier Roman fortress circuit, thereby preserving the strategic layout established when Chester served as the Roman legionary fortress of Deva Victrix.
