Thornhill Hall moat is an ancient monument in Yorkshire comprising the earthwork remains of a moated enclosure associated with a substantial medieval or early post-medieval residence. The site retains physical evidence of formal gardens and a bowling green, landscape features typical of gentry houses from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries onwards. Adjacent to the hall complex are remnants of the pre-seventeenth century open-field agricultural system that would have surrounded the settlement, preserving evidence of the wider medieval and early modern land use patterns of the area. Together, these features document the evolution of a significant local estate from its medieval origins through the development of its landscape in the early modern period.
