Totternhoe Castle is a motte and bailey castle located in Bedfordshire, England, dating to the Norman period following the conquest of 1066. The site comprises a substantial earthen mound with an associated bailey, characteristic of early medieval fortifications constructed to establish Norman control over the English landscape. Associated with the castle are medieval quarries and cultivation terraces visible in the surrounding landscape, evidence of exploitation of the local chalk geology and agricultural use of the land during the medieval period. The monument is protected as a scheduled ancient monument and represents an important example of Norman defensive architecture in the East Midlands region.
