Two round cairns, three Romano-British settlements and aggregate field systems at Severals and Intake, and Smardale Gill lime kilns and quarry is a complex of monuments spanning multiple periods in Westmorland, located within an upland landscape. The site comprises prehistoric round cairns, evidence of Romano-British settlement and associated field systems, and post-medieval lime kilns with associated quarrying activity. The Romano-British components indicate agricultural and domestic activity during the Romano-British period, whilst the cairns represent earlier prehistoric burial or ceremonial structures. The later lime kilns and quarries represent the economic exploitation of the local geology for lime production, which would have served construction and agricultural purposes in the early modern period.
