Verulamium is a substantial portion of the defensive wall and ditch system of a major Roman city located near the modern town of St Albans in Hertfordshire. The visible remains consist of a well-preserved stretch of the city wall, constructed of flint and Roman brick, together with the accompanying defensive ditch, both dating to the second and third centuries AD when the settlement had achieved the status of a municipium. The wall stands to considerable height in places and represents one of the finest examples of Roman military architecture surviving in Britain. These defences enclosed a thriving urban centre of significant importance within the Romano-British economy, and the preservation of the wall and ditch provides essential archaeological evidence for understanding the scale, development, and defensive requirements of this major provincial settlement during the later Roman period.
