Overview

History & significance

Warkworth Castle is a substantial medieval fortress in Northumberland that evolved from a Norman motte and bailey foundation into one of the region's most impressive strongholds. The castle was developed progressively from the late twelfth century onwards, with the addition of the distinctive lion-shaped keep, which dominates the site and represents one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in northern England. The castle occupies a commanding position on a meander of the River Coquet and served as an important stronghold for the Percy family, whose seat it became. The site also incorporates a collegiate church within its precincts, reflecting the religious and administrative functions characteristic of major medieval castles, and the surviving structures provide substantial evidence of both military design and domestic occupation across several centuries.
