Wat's Dyke is an Anglo-Saxon linear earthwork of probable eighth-century date, forming part of a larger defensive system in the borderlands between England and Wales. The scheduled monument section extends approximately 365 metres north-east from a point near Gate House on Shrewsbury Road in Shropshire, consisting of a substantial bank-and-ditch construction typical of early medieval frontier fortifications. Though fragmentary in its surviving state, this stretch preserves important evidence of the engineering and territorial organisation of the Anglo-Saxon period in the Welsh Marches. The dyke's broader system, of which this constitutes a component, remains significant for understanding early medieval political boundaries and military strategy in the region.
