Wat's Dyke is a section of an early medieval linear earthwork that survives as a prominent bank, approximately 375 metres in length, situated south of Middleton Road and west of Laburnum Drive near Oswestry in Shropshire. The dyke dates to the seventh or eighth century and represents part of a substantial frontier defence constructed during the period of Anglo-Saxon territorial expansion in the Welsh borderlands. This particular section preserves the characteristic form of the monument as a substantial raised bank, which originally extended for several kilometres across the landscape as a territorial boundary marker. The earthwork demonstrates the significant engineering effort invested in early medieval border demarcation between Anglo-Saxon and Welsh political territories.
