Overview

History & significance

West Blockhouse Fort is a Post-Medieval coastal defence structure located in Pembrokeshire, Wales, constructed during the period of English Civil War fortifications or the subsequent Commonwealth era. The fort was built to protect the strategically important waters of Milford Haven, one of Britain's finest natural harbours, and formed part of the defensive network controlling access to this significant anchorage. The structure exhibits the characteristic angular bastioned design typical of seventeenth-century military engineering, adapted to take advantage of its coastal position. West Blockhouse Fort remains an important example of Post-Medieval military architecture and demonstrates the sustained strategic importance of Pembrokeshire's coastal defences during the period of political and military upheaval in the mid-seventeenth century.
