Overview

History & significance

Westfield is a post-medieval enclosure system located northwest of Westfield in Angus, Scotland. The site comprises field boundaries and associated divisions characteristic of the early modern period of agricultural reorganisation in the Scottish lowlands. Such enclosure landscapes typically represent the transition from open-field cultivation to consolidated, privately managed farmland, a process that gained momentum from the sixteenth century onwards. The physical remains consist of earthwork boundaries that, whilst possibly modified through subsequent agricultural use, preserve evidence of planned land division strategies employed during this formative period of rural development.
