The site represents evidence of rural settlement and farming activity during the Romano-British period, when Roman administrative and military influence extended into northern England. The farmstead survives as an archaeological monument indicative of the dispersed pattern of agricultural exploitation that characterised Romano-British land use in the region during the first four centuries CE.
