Overview

History & significance

White Abbey is a Premonstratensian abbey founded in the thirteenth century in the townland of Druin La Croix, near Newtownabbey in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The abbey was established as part of the widespread expansion of the Premonstratensian order across medieval Ireland and represents an important example of early mendicant institutional settlement in Ulster. The site retains fragmentary remains of its religious structures, reflecting the layout and building practices typical of regular canons' communities of the period. Like many Irish monastic establishments, White Abbey was affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, and its physical remains have subsequently deteriorated, though the site remains of archaeological significance for understanding medieval religious life in northern Ireland.
