The World War II minefield control tower and pillbox located approximately 940 metres and 980 metres respectively south-east of Holliwell Farm comprise part of Essex's coastal defence infrastructure constructed during the Second World War. These structures formed part of the anti-invasion measures implemented along the Essex coast following the threat of German invasion in 1940 and the subsequent years of conflict. The minefield control tower would have functioned as an observation and command post for the management of defensive minefields positioned to obstruct potential amphibious landings, whilst the pillbox represents the standard reinforced concrete defensive structure deployed across Britain's threatened coastlines. Together, these monuments constitute important archaeological witnesses to the defensive strategies and engineering responses adopted by Britain during the Second World War period.
