Auchinhove is a Flavian-period Roman temporary marching camp in Moray, north-east Scotland, situated on rising ground near Keith. It is generally associated with the Agricolan campaigns of the late AD 70s–80s into northern Caledonia, and belongs to the series of large camps tracking the Roman advance beyond the Mounth.

Significance

Historical significance

The camp is one of the so-called "Stracathro-type" camps, identified by the distinctive internal clavicula-and-traverse arrangement at its gates, a layout almost exclusively linked to Agricola's northern campaigns. Together with Muiryfold, Glenmailen (Ythan Wells) and Stracathro itself, it helps trace a probable Flavian line of march through Aberdeenshire and Moray towards the Spey.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site is known principally from aerial photography, which has revealed cropmarks of the rampart circuit and characteristic Stracathro-style gateways; no significant excavation has been published, and dating rests on typological comparison rather than stratified finds. Its full size and internal arrangements remain only partially defined.
