Significance

Historical significance

The villa sits in a densely villa'd landscape between the small towns of Alchester to the east and Cirencester (Corinium) to the west, and would have formed part of the agrarian economy supplying these centres. Its position alongside a coaxial field system makes it valuable evidence for the organisation of estate agriculture in the Oxfordshire countryside rather than as a high-status outlier.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site is known principally from cropmarks, geophysical survey and surface finds (including building debris, tesserae and Romano-British pottery) recorded during work in Blenheim Park; no major modern excavation of the villa building itself has been published. The associated rectilinear field system, trackways and enclosures are visible as earthworks and cropmarks extending over a considerable area around the villa core.
