Overview

History & context

Chesterton-on-Fosse was a small Romano-British roadside settlement on the Fosse Way in southern Warwickshire, situated between High Cross (Venonis) to the north and Cirencester (Corinium) to the south. Active from the later 1st century AD through the 4th century, it appears to have functioned as a posting station or minor nucleated settlement serving traffic along this major military and commercial artery, with associated agricultural activity in the surrounding landscape.

Significance

Historical significance

Its significance lies primarily in its position on the Fosse Way, one of the earliest Roman roads in Britain and an axis of the early frontier system; sites like Chesterton illustrate the secondary network of stopping-points and rural service settlements that grew up between the major towns of the central Midlands.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site is best known from cropmarks, surface scatters of Roman pottery and tile, and from the nearby Chesterton villa complex, including a bath-house excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries; coin finds spanning the 2nd–4th centuries have been recovered, but no large-scale modern excavation of the roadside settlement itself has been published, so its internal layout and full extent remain poorly defined.
