Overview

History & context

Compton Abdale Roman villa lies in the Cotswold uplands of Gloucestershire, in a region exceptionally dense with rural villa estates serving the civitas of the Dobunni and the nearby town of Corinium (Cirencester). Like its Cotswold neighbours, it was likely established in the 2nd century AD on the back of earlier Iron Age or early Roman occupation, with its main floruit in the prosperous 3rd–4th centuries when Cotswold villa culture reached its peak.

Significance

Historical significance

The site forms part of the remarkable concentration of villa estates clustered within roughly 15 km of Corinium — including Chedworth, Withington, Yanworth and Listercombe Bottom — whose wealth derived from arable farming, sheep-rearing and the wool trade on the limestone uplands. It is not individually famous, but contributes to the picture of an intensively exploited and prosperous late Roman countryside in this corner of Britannia Prima.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Little has been published in detail about Compton Abdale specifically; the site is known principally from surface finds, building material scatters and antiquarian/HER records rather than from major modern excavation, and no full plan of the villa buildings has been recovered. Comparable Cotswold sites suggest a stone-built winged-corridor or courtyard structure with tessellated floors and a bath suite would be likely, but this remains inferential for
