Overview

History & context

Farningham is the site of at least three Romano-British villas clustered in the Darent Valley of west Kent, part of the dense villa landscape lining this river. Activity spans broadly from the late 1st to the 4th century AD, with the principal site (Farningham I / Manor House) being a modest winged-corridor villa, while Farningham II appears to have been a smaller building of more agricultural character.

Significance

Historical significance

The cluster sits within one of the most intensively villa-developed valleys in Roman Britain, lying just 2.5 km NE of Lullingstone and within a chain that includes Eynsford and Horton Kirby; collectively these estates exploited the fertile Darent terraces and the proximity to Watling Street and Londinium. Farningham illustrates how multiple, possibly subordinate, rural establishments could coexist near a major high-status villa, suggesting a tiered estate landscape rather than isolated holdings.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations in the 1950s–60s (notably by Meates and by Philp's Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit) recorded masonry foundations, tile, painted wall plaster, and pottery indicating occupation through the 2nd–4th centuries, with one building producing evidence of a corn-drying oven and agricultural use. Compared to neighbouring Lullingstone the remains are modest and only partially investigated, and no mosaics or bath suites of comparable elaboration have been reported.
