Significance

Historical significance

The site is significant for documenting the transition from indigenous round-house to Romanised rectilinear architecture in a frontier zone, and for its close relationship with the nearby fort and vicus at Piercebridge on Dere Street. It suggests the existence of a small class of estate-owning, partially Romanised landholders operating just behind the northern military frontier.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations by Dorothy Charlesworth and later by Harding revealed a sequence beginning with timber and stone round-houses, succeeded by a stone-built rectangular range with projecting wings, alongside enclosure ditches and evidence of mixed agricultural activity. Finds were relatively modest — pottery, querns, and limited fine wares — consistent with a working farm rather than a high-status residence.
