Overview

History & context

Lammas Field is the site of a Romano-British villa located in the parish of Western Bury (Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire borderlands), on the chalk uplands north of the Chilterns. Like most villas in this region, it was likely established in the late 1st or 2nd century AD and continued in occupation into the 4th century, functioning as the centre of a mixed agricultural estate exploiting the productive arable land of the area.

Significance

Historical significance

The villa sits within a densely settled rural landscape between the small towns of Baldock, Braughing and Verulamium (St Albans), the regional civitas capital of the Catuvellauni, and would have produced grain and livestock for those urban and roadside markets. It is one of many modest villas in this belt rather than a high-status site comparable to Gadebridge Park or Gorhambury.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is recorded specifically for Lammas Field; the site is known principally from surface finds — Roman building material (tile, tesserae) and pottery scatters — recovered through fieldwalking and reported to the local Historic Environment Record, with no published excavation. The scale, plan and precise chronology of the building therefore remain undetermined.
