Overview

History & context

This is a surviving length of Roman road north of Bateson's Farm in the Forest of Bowland area of Lancashire, part of the route linking the auxiliary fort at Ribchester (Bremetennacum) with the fort at Burrow-in-Lonsdale (Calacum) via the Trough of Bowland. The road was likely laid out in the later 1st century AD, probably in the Agricolan period, and remained in use through the 2nd–4th centuries as a military and supply artery across the Pennine uplands.

Significance

Historical significance

Its primary role was strategic and logistical, connecting garrisons on the western flank of the Pennines and providing a transverse link between the Ribble and Lune valleys in a region of otherwise difficult terrain. Such cross-country roads were essential for troop movement, taxation, and the supply of frontier installations further north.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The road survives in places as a low agger with traces of side ditches, identifiable from earthwork survey and aerial photography rather than excavation; metalling of cobbles and gravel has been recorded on comparable stretches of the Ribchester–Burrow route. No substantial published excavation is recorded for this specific length, and detail beyond its line and basic structure is limited.
