History & context

*Leucomagus is generally identified with the Romano-British settlement at East Anton, just north of Andover in Hampshire, near the confluence of several roads in the upper Test valley. The name (Brittonic, roughly "white plain/field") is attested in the Ravenna Cosmography, and the site appears to have been active from the later 1st century AD through the 4th century, functioning as a small nucleated roadside settlement.

Significance

Historical significance

The settlement's importance lay in its position at a road junction where routes from Cirencester (Corinium), Silchester (Calleva), Winchester (Venta Belgarum), and Old Sarum (Sorviodunum) converged, making it a minor node in the road network of central southern Britain — likely serving as a posting station and local market centre rather than an administrative capital.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Aerial photography, geophysics, and limited excavation around East Anton have revealed enclosures, trackways, building platforms, and scatters of Romano-British pottery and tile consistent with a roadside small town, though no monumental structures or defences are known and the identification with *Leucomagus, while widely accepted, remains based on toponymic and itinerary reasoning rather than an epigraphic find.
