Overview

History & context

The Priddy site, situated on the Mendip plateau just northeast of the parish church, is interpreted as a small Romano-British villa or farmstead, likely active during the later Roman period (broadly 2nd–4th centuries AD). Its upland setting at around 250m above sea level is unusual for a villa, and its character was probably modest — a working agricultural establishment rather than an elite residence.

Significance

Historical significance

The site lies within the Mendip lead-mining zone, only a few kilometres from the major imperial lead workings at Charterhouse-on-Mendip, and its existence likely reflects the prosperity generated by extractive industry and associated pastoralism on the hills. It contributes to a regional pattern of small villas and farmsteads clustered around the Mendip orefield, distinct from the richer villa landscape of the Somerset lowlands around Ilchester and Bath.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

A limited excavation in 1964 identified Roman building remains, but the results were never fully published and details of plan, dating evidence, and finds are sparse in the published record. Without more substantial fieldwork the building's specific form, status, and chronology remain poorly characterised.
