The site formed part of the network of forts securing the conquest and consolidation of northern England, linked to the strategically vital corridor between Doncaster (Danum) and York (Eboracum) via the crossing of the River Aire. Such installations were key to projecting Roman military power into Brigantia and supporting supply movement along the principal north-south route.
Cropmark, geophysical and limited excavation evidence in the Castleford area has revealed playing-card-shaped enclosures, defensive ditches, internal timber buildings, and an associated vicus producing samian, mortaria and other Flavian-Trajanic material. Specific recorded findings for this particular monument are limited, but it forms part of the wider complex of military and civilian features documented around the Aire crossing.
