Milestones along this stretch of road marked the strategic military supply route across the Pennines connecting the forts of the Eden Valley with the trans-Pennine network, and served both practical wayfinding and imperial propaganda functions through their emperor-dedicated inscriptions. They are among the most direct surviving evidence of imperial road maintenance in the northern frontier zone.
