Significance

Historical significance

The road linked two important civitas centres — Sorviodunum and Venta Belgarum — and would have carried official, military, and commercial traffic across the chalk between the Avon and Test valleys, passing through a landscape dotted with farms, small settlements, and the well-known Winterslow Roman burial and villa sites. Its alignment helped fix the pattern of later parish boundaries and trackways in the area.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The agger is visible in places as a low causeway on the downs near Winterslow, and the line has been traced through fieldwork and aerial survey rather than systematic excavation; metalling of flint and chalk has been noted where the road has been sectioned informally. No substantial published excavation of this stretch is recorded, and associated finds derive mainly from adjacent settlement and burial sites at Winterslow rather than the road itself.
