Overview

History & context

The Badminton Park villa lies in the Cotswold dip-slope landscape of south Gloucestershire, an area densely populated with Romano-British rural estates during the 2nd–4th centuries AD. Geophysical and surface evidence indicates a villa complex superimposed on an earlier (probably Iron Age or early Roman) settlement, suggesting continuity of occupation from the late prehistoric period through to the late Roman period, broadly comparable to other Cotswold villas in its hinterland.

Significance

Historical significance

The site forms part of the exceptionally dense villa landscape between Bath (Aquae Sulis) and Cirencester (Corinium Dobunnorum), the regional capital of the Dobunni, and would have functioned as an agricultural estate producing surplus for these urban markets. Its position fits the well-documented pattern of prosperous arable and pastoral villa estates exploiting the limestone uplands and clay vales of the western Cotswolds.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Little has been published in detail on this specific site; it is known principally through earthwork survey, geophysics and surface finds (including building rubble, tile and pottery) within Badminton Park rather than from systematic excavation. The presence of underlying earlier settlement features is inferred from cropmarks and artefact scatters predating the masonry phase, but no full structural plan, mosaic record or dating sequence has been firmly established in the public record.
